Jessica Lange

The fragile, luminous beauty of actress Jessica Lange belies the inner strength and vitality she exhibits in the characters she portrays. Though not among Hollywood's most high-profile stars, she became one of its most respected dramatic actresses. For Lange, however, the road to respect was a long one, due in large part to her disastrous debut in the lavish Dino de Laurentiis stinker King Kong.Lange had a peripatetic childhood. Born a traveling salesman's daughter in Cloquet, MN, in 1949, she moved at least 18 times while growing up.

She studied art for two years at the University of Minnesota before running off to Paris, where she studied mime and danced in the chorus of the Opera Comique. She later moved to New York, where she worked as a waitress and model until she was chosen to play the part of a giant gorilla's romantic obsession in the 1976 remake of King Kong. Unfortunately, Lange's acting abilities at the time were not all that remarkable, and she was roundly ridiculed for her performance.

It would be three years before she appeared in another film. She made good use of that time, however, studying drama and networking with industry figures. She was romantically involved with choreographer/director Bob Fosse when he cast her as the angel of death in All That Jazz (1979).

She next played a supporting role in How to Beat the High Co$t of Living (1980), but did not break through into major stardom until she was cast opposite Jack Nicholson in Bob Rafelson's The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981). It was in this film that she first displayed the dangerous sexuality and galvanizing charisma that would lead pooh-poohing critics to recant their earlier assessment that Lange was all looks and no talent. The following year marked a turning point in Lange's career.

After much lobbying with numerous directors, she finally employed novice Graeme Clifford for Frances, her self-produced adaptation of former actress Frances Farmer's autobiography, Will There Ever Be a Morning? Lange played the title role in the wrenching drama, and became so caught up in the many traumas of Farmer's tragic life (something that was allegedly complicated by Lange's personal tragedies during her own youth), that she nearly suffered a breakdown. Despite the trials of playing the character, Lange later considered it her favorite role.

On a more positive note, while shooting the film, she also met actor/playwright Sam Shepard, the man who would father two of her three children and become her long-term lover. (She previously had a daughter by dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov.)Later in 1982, Lange changed gears and appeared as the beautiful object of Dustin Hoffman's obsession in Tootsie. Though she played the only non-comic role in the romantic comedy, she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She also netted a Best Actress nod for Frances, making her the first actress to receive two Academy Award nominations in a single year.

Over the next decade, Lange received Best Actress nominations three more times (for Country, Sweet Dreams in which Lange, who admits she can't sing, played country music heroine Patsy Cline and The Music Box) before finally winning the award for playing a mentally unstable military wife in Blue Sky (1994). If Lange's film appearances sometimes seemed sporadic, it was due to her willingness to take time off to be with her family, as well as a desire to work on the stage. In 1991, she starred as Blanche Dubois opposite Alec Baldwin in a Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire.

Although her stage debut received mixed reviews, Lange later turned in a more finely rendered Blanche in the 1995 TV version of the play, and reprised her role again for its 1996 London production. Lange also appeared in two films in 1995, notably Rob Roy with Liam Neeson. Two years later, she starred with Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Jason Robards Jr. in Jocelyn Moorehouse's moderately well-received adaptation of Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres. She then appeared in another star-studded affair alongside Anthony Hopkins, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, and Alan Cumming in Titus, Julie Taymor's 1999 rendering of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus.Lange disappeared from screens in the early 2000s (partly due to the shelving of Prozac Nation), but came back with three films in 2003. She played Albert Finney's wife in Tim Burton's Big Fish, the wife of a man who undergoes a sex change in Normal, and she was one of the famous people in the enigmatic Bob Dylan movie Masked and Anonymous. She also starred with Sam Shepard in Wim Wenders' 2004 film Don't Come Knockin'. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi.

Vanessa And Kobe Bryant Divorce

Shamed basketball star Kobe Bryant was almost served with divorce papers four years ago it has emerged.

The love cheat's estranged wife Vanessa saw divorce lawyers after being pushed to the limit by the NBA legend's antics, according to RadarOnline.

But she had a change of heart after the Los Angeles Lakers star promised to change his ways and attend marriage counselling.

A source close to the couple said: 'Vanessa almost threw in the towel four years ago. 'Kobe has always had a slew of girlfriends, and the cheating was almost blatant.

'Vanessa had consulted with a divorce attorney, not Laura Wasser, who she has hired to represent her now. Kobe promised Vanessa he would stop cheating, and the two went to marriage counselling.

'Kobe did seem like a devoted husband, and Vanessa decided not to go through with filing at that time.'

She even stood by him when he was accused of sexually assaulting a worker at an hotel in Colorado.

The 33-year-old admitted having sexual relations with 19-year old hotel employee Katelyn Faber, but denied assault.

The case was dropped by prosecutors after she refused to testify in the trial, but a separate civil lawsuit was eventually settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.

However Vanessa decided to call time on their marriage of almost 11 years after growing tired of his philandering, despite hoping they could work things out for the sake of their two daughters.

The source said: 'Vanessa wanted to stay together for the children. Vanessa stood by Kobe during his darkest hour, and she believed him when he said there would be no more women.

'Vanessa began to get suspicious again about 16 months ago about Kobe cheating on her, he knew that if he wasn't faithful, she would leave him. Vanessa had no other choice.'

The reverlation follows claims the NBA favourite was growing close to one of Kim Kardashian's best friends Carla DiBello.

Several websites claimed DiBello, 27, has been on close terms with the millionaire athlete for the last couple of years, according to Radar Online.

Some note that she has been spotted courtside at Lakers games.

Carla is one of 31-year-old Kardashian's closest friends, and is also a producer on Keeping Up With The Kardashians and Kourtney & Kim Take New York.

She travels around the world with the reality behemoth, and most recently was by her side during Kim's trip to Dubai.

Carla was director of strategic relations for SBE Group which owns a number of exclusive hotels and clubs in Hollywood.

She was also Steve Wynn’s assistant at his luxury hotel casino of the same name in Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, TMZ are reporting that Kobe is worth much less than the $400 million that was being suggested in some quarters, with his net worth instead being around $150 million.

Still a small fortune, but with a divorce settlement looming, every dollar will count as Kobe prepares to negotiate spousal and child support.

Vanessa filed for divorce from her NBA superstar husband citing 'irreconcilable differences.'

TMZ further claims that she has caught Kobe with 'multiple women' over the years - but the latest affair was the one that broke the camel's back.

Sources did not tell the website how she found out about his alleged fling with DiBello - but apparently it was through text messages.

Vanessa, 29 , who stuck by Kobe, 33, after he was charged with sexually assaulting a Colorado woman in 2003, has been married to the LA Lakers player for ten years.

The couple have no pre-nuptial agreement, according to TMZ, so Vanessa will be entitled to substantial monies and has requested spousal support.

It is said that Kobe has already moved out of the mansion in Orange County that the couple once shared.

According to TMZ, Kobe purchased the abode ten years ago, but Vanessa will get the home as part of the couple's divorce settlement.

The pair met when she was just 18, when she was working as a backing dancer in a studio where he was recording, though that material was never released to the public.

According to the legal documents obtained by TMZ, Vanessa is asking for joint custody of their two daughters - eight-year-old Natalia and five-year-old Gianna.

But Vanessa is asking that Kobe get visitation rights, which means she wants the kids in her care most of the time.

Vanessa is being represented by Laura Wasser and attorney Samantha Klein, whose clients include Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie, Maria Shriver and Kim Kardashian.

Eva Ekvall

The beauty queen was crowned Miss Venezuela at the age of 17 in 2000, and the following year she was third runner-up in the Miss Universe pageant in Puerto Rico. She went on to work as a model, actress and television presenter.

She also wrote a book, Fuera de Foco (Out of Focus), about her struggle with cancer, which included images by Venezuelan photographer Roberto Mata.

In an interview last year, she told the newspaper El Nacional: "I needed to send the message of the need for cancer prevention."

Her cover portrait showed her without makeup and her head shaved. The book also included images of her while going through chemotherapy.

"I hate to see photos in which I come out ugly," she said at the time. "But you know what? Nobody ever said cancer is pretty or that I should look like Miss Venezuela when I have cancer."

In her book, Ms Ekvall described her joy at the birth of her daughter saying: "that happiness, although (the daughter) may not know it or understand it, keeps me alive today."

The book included emails that she wrote to friends providing updates on her treatment and thanking them for their support, as well as short essays by relatives and friends reflecting on her ordeal.

Her father, Eric Ekvall, recalled in the book that his mother, also named Eva, had died of the same type of cancer at age 39.

"Those who know Eva know she doesn't give up," he wrote of his daughter. "She fights for what she wants."

Ms Ekvall's remains were cremated in Houston where she was in hospital and are being taken home to Venezuela where her funeral will be held.

Although her mother is Jamaican and her father is American of Swedish and Hungarian descent, she once said: "I feel more Venezuelan than anybody."

Her husband posted a photo on Twitter on Sunday of a close-up of his hand holding hers, resting on a bed, with the words "Always together ... I love you wife."
